There’s a similar layout when you click on library and then shows in Apple Podcasts but it’s not useful when you need to take a couple of extra steps to view all the podcasts you subscribed to. Some new apps are offering new features like snipping and saving clips from the podcast when you are listening to it (Snipd has this feature). As cool as those features are, those apps don’t offer the same comfort that Pocket Casts does. When you are in commute or taking a walk or cooking something in the kitchen and you want to play something in the background, Pocket Casts makes it a simple choice to click and play whatever you want. This is the reason I stuck with Pocket Casts. In the last 5 years, Podcasts have become a huge industry and that led to an explosion of content. With many shows to subscribe to, it should be a simple experience to later browse and listen to them. This is something that a lot of new apps are missing. Spotify in particular makes it hard to find and listen to podcasts. The app gives a cluttered experience with Music & Podcasts in the same tab, separating that could make it easier to use (which I think they will be doing soon: Spotify is reorganizing its app to better separate podcasts and music) Affordabilityįive years back, I paid for this app but since then Pocket Casts released a free version that has most of the features you need and a plus version at $0.99 per month which gives you access to the web app, desktop apps, and also 10GB of cloud storage for storing and listening to any other audio content. Pocket Casts is available on almost all platforms: Android, Web, iPad, iPhone, Windows, and macOS. Pocket Casts is one of the very few podcast apps that offer cross-platform apps to listen to podcasts Cons PODCASTS IT WRONG APP POCKET CASTS PLUSĪlthough you need to subscribe to the plus version to use web and desktop apps. Searching and finding podcasts could be a bit slow sometimes. I never had any issue not finding the podcast I’m looking for but the search could sometimes take time, just a few seconds to display the results.Īs much as I love the simplicity offered by the app, I would love it even more if there is a feature to highlight or snip podcast episodes.Rush Sherman sent in our very first video dumb question: You can find all the podcasts wherever they were published on Pocket Casts. I love this question because of how Rush feels betrayed because I had moved on. But even better, I love this question because I have wondered myself why I use Downcast when I said to use Pocket Casts. The first thing to tell you is that I actually use both! I use Pocket Casts on my iPhone for audio podcasts, and I use Downcast on my iPad for video podcasts. But I still had to go through both apps to try and articulate why I don’t use one podcatcher for both. In looking at the two apps side by side now to explain my usage, I’ve discovered that Pocket Casts does support video now, so if I was to choose today, what would I pick? The origination of my move to Downcast for video shows was that Pocket Casts didn’t support video. The best place to start is to set up our requirements. Sort of like problems to be solved, right? I do have different requirements depending on the device. Downcast on iPad for video playbackįor example, on iPad I want the easiest way to fast forward and reverse. I often miss something and want to hear it again so a quick backward swipe on screen is a delightful gesture. On iPhone I want to be able to set up playlists so I can queue up a series of short audio shows for a long run, or maybe a series of long shows for a long drive. PODCASTS IT WRONG APP POCKET CASTS SERIES Several of the audio and video shows to which I subscribe have very long preroll intros and ads. I’d like the option to have the shows start at a prescribed time in, but it’s different for each show. The ad lengths in the shows can be very long too, so the time fast forwarded upon a gesture might need to be very long on particular shows. I’m pretty sure you can guess what shows I’m talking about. One of the main features that caught people’s attention is the way it will clip out silence. There are some shows where the speakers may leave a long pause from time to time. Removing the silence can make it more enjoyable and get you through a show faster. PODCASTS IT WRONG APP POCKET CASTS FREE.PODCASTS IT WRONG APP POCKET CASTS SERIES.
